An informal, stream-of-consciousness reflection on business ideas, events and issues in modern business, modern life and with some specifics to the web-software industry by Paul Tomori, Internet Entrepreneur

Doing Something Just Because You Can Is Not Always Wise

I am still mystified that Flash programming on the internet still gets used, but I guess those young whipper-snapper graphic designers who just graduated from college need something to justify a high invoice (wink wink - you know that I know who you are!).

Ever-controversial, but seldom dumb Steve Jobs decided to forego Flash support for the iPad and iPhone. He reasoned that HTML5 will pull off the important things that Flash can offer, but without all the trickery that comes with having to script complex (and often overdone) animation sequences. You know, I have written about this before. Perhaps I am simple.... or maybe I just appreciate simple things, but c'mon, if you design something "flashy" and have to include a "skip intro" option for your flashy sequence, maybe you should just skip designing that fancy intro in the first place.

Case in point... Why oh why does this website need the blurring of images when you hover your mouse over one of them?

Really? Is that necessary? I think it is painful on the eyes. Then again, despite my young age, maybe I am just old-fashioned. If you are a commercial artist or web designer, really think through the reasoning for your use of fancy technologies. Are you just showing off or are you actually trying to reach a sales objective with your work. Keep the user experience at the forefront of what you do and dare I say it... do less.
